Sun Microsystems (Sun) skyrocketed from a venture firm in Silicon Valley to a worldwide high-tech company. The company has conducted in-house surveys and pilot programs since the early 90s in search for models of working environments and workstyles that best fit the age of knowledge work. iWork’s i stands for Internet, and is a conclusion drawn from their abundant data and experiences. The network is your office, not a little cubicle or walled office. iWork is an office which appears wherever and whenever you need one.
To put iWork into practice, Sun first divided workstyles into three categories and assigned each worker to one of the following: "Assigned" for the workers who belong to a certain office (mostly engineers), "Flexible" for those who do not belong to any office, and "Home Based" for those who work four or five days at home (mostly sales and service people).

A Drop-In Center is a temporary workspace for an assigned worker while he or she is at another site. Inside the main café of No. 11 building on Menlo Park Campus is iWork Café, the campus' Drop-In center. Every seat at the counter, private workspace and tables with banquettes is equipped with a Sun Ray terminal, accessible to every worker with a Sun ID. There is no need to carry a PC to do a job required.

Flexible zone is located inside the No.10 building at Menlo Park Campus. Here are flexible offices that can be booked one day at a time, by flexible workers. With a Sun Card, which serves as an ID card as well as an in-house debit card, a reservation can be made according to type of workstations and equipment on campus.

Sun’s iWork Center is located in SOMA (South of Market), on the fourth floor of an old building. A counter situated in the middle serves as a drop-in space and requires no reservation. Other spaces are flexible zones with cubicles, private rooms, group spaces and meeting rooms. These flexible offices require reservations, but can be booked up to 5 consecutive days. A new freedom in workstyle is gained, when one can choose to work in a different office with a fresh feeling every day.
