SCIL
Palo Alto, California, USA
SCIL (Stanford Center for Innovations in Learning) sets its objective to reform learning methods. It is a research institution to create new learning styles, using cutting-edge technology. It was formerly known as SLL (Stanford Learning Lab), which was established in 1997 to improve undergraduate education. SCIL was launched in 2002, merging SLL, with an expanded scope covering the entire spectrum of education from early childhood to higher education.
Wallenberg Hall on the campus of Stanford University, built in 1900, was inaugurated as the headquarters of SCIL in 2002 after an extensive interior renovation while the exterior was left untouched. This building stands as a new symbol for the university that aims to revolutionize education in its steps to lead the 21st century.

The fourth floor is the project space for research and development, a site for cutting-edge projects aiming to innovate learning methods. Consisting of a large open area and individual spaces called "Box Cars" for intensive work, the floor hosts many project teams working on different projects at the same time. There is no fixed partition except for the Box Cars in the middle, and all the furniture is movable. Each team of researchers has the furniture arranged differently to create its own project space. In addition to the wireless LAN that allows you to access the network, there are movable whiteboards and plasma displays distributed in various places to support teamwork.

The fruits of the research are tested in the lecture rooms on the first floor. New hardware and software, such as Copy Cam, a whiteboard where a student can take a digital photo of the board, and then print it out or send to the server on the Web, have been developed at Stanford University. The user-friendly technologies are subtly embedded into this learning space of the future.
