Schiphol Airport

| A decade ago, a business center at an airport was a space
for privileged businessmen. Today, there is no need for an exaggerated business
center for just checking e-mails, because so many Internet access points are readily
available. Airport business centers have faced the necessity to change and diversify.
Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, known for one of the most advanced facilities in
the world, is leading the trend. |

Communication Centre, located on the second floor of the
central departure lounge, is a space that targets business and leisure travelers
alike. In front of the service counter are 28 Internet workstations with Broadband
connection and they are as convenient as Internet Cafés. In addition, there are
mini offices in the back to be rented by the hour or half hour. Each office is
equipped with PC and a fax machine. Access to copier and printers allows sufficient
environment for routine work. There are 80 other Internet workstations throughout
the airport (to be increased to 110 by the end of 2002) as well as access zones
for wireless LAN.
Travelers who need a space for quick work such as checking and sending e-mail
prefer spots like the Communication Centre as they are more convenient as touchdown
spaces. This forces conventional business centers to change their roles. At Schiphol,
the Business & Conference Centre has been in operation since 1994, and it
originally consisted of meeting rooms with a capacity up to 24 people, small rooms
and individual cubicles. However, the Centre changed its concept radically in
2002 and replaced small individual cubicles with large meeting rooms which can
accommodate up to 50 or 60 people. In other words, the Centre was reborn as a
conference center. Users are international businessmen from various countries
such as Europe, the U.S. and Asia. This owes to the fact that Schiphol serves
as a gateway to Europe for travelers from around the world, as well as a hub airport
for European travelers due to its central location in Europe. Thus, businessmen
from different countries gather for meetings at this Centre and move on to their
respective destinations when meetings are over. |
