E*TRADE
Menlo Park, California, USA
E*Trade, a leader in on-line securities trading, is now on its way to implementing a larger vision of offering one-stop services covering not only securities trading but also other financial services such as banking, retirement pension and insurance. It has grown rapidly in the past few years by making many strategic acquisitions. As the size of the firm grew, so did the number of offices. How to integrate them and build new offices has been at the top of the agenda.
The keyword in E*Trade's facility strategy is "centerless." To paraphrase this, "since on-line trading is what E*Trade is all about, office location does not matter, as long as they are networked."

Reflecting the distributed corporate structure, no one function is concentrated in one place. For example, most sites have their own training facilities and R&D is divided into different locations according to the subject of development. The Menlo Park Office functions mainly as a training center for the Silicon Valley area. Also at this location are R&D, and some headquarter functions such as HR, Marketing and Legal departments.

All individual spaces are treated as equal, similar to how separate sites are treated. Even the CEO is assigned an open corner space with the standard system furniture. In order to complement the open office, the ratio of conference facilities is high, at one for every 15 workers. Meeting rooms in three different sizes are evenly distributed throughout the two buildings. Common spaces such as Quiet Rooms, for informal meetings, and Phone Booths that can double as touchdown spaces for visitors, are adequately provided.

Under the strategy where “the office should evolve in keeping pace with evolving businesses,” the offices of E*Trade continue to change with speed and efficiency, the online trading style.
