Nokia
Mountain View, California, USA
Known as a leading mobile phone manufacturer all over the world, NOKIA sells its products in 130 countries, manufactures in 10 countries and carries out research and development activities in 14 countries, hiring 60,000 employees. It is a big-name global company that is headquartered in Finland.
NOKIA was once a conglomerate that originated as a paper pulp factory in 1865. In the 1990s, the company restructured its business by selling divisions of rubber, cables and electrical appliances and concentrated on mobile phones and communication infrastructures. As part of the strategy, the company acquired IPSILON NETWORKS (IPSILON,) a venture company developing IP switch technology, in December 1997.
To accommodate the workforce and know-how of IPSILON, a new office was created in Mountain View, California, for the Internet Protocol Routing Group (IPRG) Division. IPRG develops technologies and equipment to layout networking cables under the floors, and for that reason the engineers call themselves Plumbers of the Internet. The exterior of the leased building is classical, but inside, all beams, columns, walls and even the electricals are exposed, resembling the inside of a tunnel, creating a cyber looking space for the plumbers. The design of the space is symbolic of their profession, as well as a statement from NOKIA to both its employees and visitors.
The workstations in the office where 70 to 80% of workforce are engineers, are mostly cubicles that can often be confined. Therefore the office is full of ideas designed to encourage communication, including casual team areas located throughout, and kitchen spaces that can double as simple meeting areas. The company slogan “Connecting People” is realized not only in the virtual mobile network, but also in the physical office space.
