The Environmental Group, which serves as the core of the IDEO San Francisco office,
is a multi-disciplinary group comprised of not only industrial designers but also
architectural, interior, and graphic designers. In comparison to the other groups,
the Environmental Group focuses more on space planning and a wide range of services
including interior design, custom furniture design, and interactive communications,
rather than on product development. |

The new IDEO San Francisco office is located in an old
warehouse that faces one of the piers nearby the Bay Bridge at the San Francisco
Bay. Since the old San Francisco office, which was only one-third of the current
office area, did not encourage communication within the office, achieving interaction
among the staff was a priority in the new office design.
Workstations were located throughout the open and continuous old warehouse space.
It was necessary for the office to be flexible to accommodate the fluidity within
the office, as teams would be reconfigured with the completion of projects. Devices
such as semi-mobile furniture with casters on one side or mobile walls were incorporated
to facilitate modifying the office layout. The height of the panels on the workstations
could also be adjusted according to individual preference. |
