Silicon Graphics
Mountain View, California, USA
Silicon Graphics, founded in 1982 in Mountain View in the Silicon Valley, has been a global leader in interactive 3D graphics since they developed IRIS 1000, the world’s first 3D graphics terminal. Visual computing technology allows quick and interactive use of the monitor to process and to access realistic 3D computer graphics. This new technology developed by SGI has expanded the possibilities of expressions and uses of images that were not possible before.
A new cluster of buildings was added to the office complex in Mountain View in 1997. At the Amphi Theatre Technology Center, SGI wanted to avoid the white vanilla box and to build an office where the character of the firm could be grasped in one quick glance.
Appropriate to SGI’s “Open Culture, Open Door Policy,” the Centre boasts of a bright and open office environment. The structure, ducts, light fixtures, and cable trays are exposed allowing natural light to illuminate the tall volumes. The interior of four buildings and the exterior of six towers were color coded with 3D color computer graphics in mind. These colors not only give the buildings a unique character, but also enable the employees and the visitors to orient themselves.
The fact that half of the employees belong to the Research and Development Group defines the character of the office. The windowless 10x10 feet closed offices, which are illuminated only with artificial lights, are only provided to those in, for example, software development or hardware design, who require an optimal environment for work on the computer and for concentration. All other employees, including the CEO, are located in cubicles with system furniture. Since the engineers in individual rooms have fewer opportunities to communicate with others, various devices are located in public or break areas to encourage communication.
