| In 1996, the Science, Industry and Business Library or
SIBL opened in the heart of New York City to help solve the problem of shelving
shortage at the New York Public Library. SIBL, a branch of the New York Public
Library, specializes in information on science, technology, economics, and business.
The result was a prototype for the Library of the 21st Century, where
visitors have access to both the collection of 1.25 million books and the electronic
data information using the latest technology. |

The classical exterior of the building, which was once
a department store built in the beginning of the twentieth century, remains unchanged.
The interior was radically renovated incorporating a modern design using stainless
steel. Compressed shelving for books are located on the second to forth floor.
The first and basement floors are public spaces with the lobby, circulation desk,
reading areas, and research rooms. The public can reserve conference rooms, lecture
halls, and seminar rooms on the basement level. These two floors were designed
not only to achieve an open space but also to allow flexibility. The spaces are
defined using panels and screens and raised floors were incorporated to allow
wires to be modified or replaced easily.
On the first and basement floors, visitors can use the librarys computers
to access databases, CD-ROMs, or the internet for research, but they can also
bring their own laptops and connect to the library system. The library database
is also available on the internet.
Electronic information is convenient for those who can use computers. SIBL tries
to adhere to the tradition of libraries as a place everyone can use,
by offering sessions to educate visitors on how to access information and how
to use the various services available at SIBL. In addition, there are research
assistants and experts in various fields who can help look for specific information
at the Information Service Center. SIBL has been placing an emphasis on information
for small businesses. Most of these inquiries are regarding patents. The adjacent
microform and patent reading room is only second in size to the National Library
in the eastern region of the United States. |
