SNCF is national railway company that provides the means of transportation throughout France. The French railway, famous for their high-speed TGV, also runs in alliance with England and Belgium the Eurostar, known for traveling through the tunnel in the ocean between England and France. The development in telecommunications has enabled people to work remotely or companies to shift their offices to the suburbs. SNCF has started to provide work environments in their trains and at their stations, allowing travel time to be used productively, and consequently to attract business travelers from the airlines.
On the Eurostar, business travelers can either work or have meetings at their spacious seats, while being served by the crew. In 1997, they introduced the “Premium Class” in the first and second classes to separate them from tourists. Cell phones can be used throughout the trip, except for the twenty minutes in the tunnel. Even while waiting at the stations, business travelers can use their time productively at the “Salon Eurostar” business centers, equipped with office equipment and meeting facilities.
SNCF has also been developing services for business travelers on their domestic lines. At several stations, they have opened “Euraffaires” business centers that also serve as waiting lounges for their members, which currently surpass 30,000. Desks, copy machines, “Minitels,” which is a French information search kiosk, and meeting areas are available at these business centers. At the reception counter, train tickets can be purchased, and reservations can be made by phone. The first business center was introduced in 1991. There are currently nine centers, and several more are being developed.
