aWarehouse
San Francisco, California, USA
In June 1996, aWarehouse was established by Stanford University graduates. Here, rooms such as the workshop and computer room face the central courtyard, individuals can collaborate or work on his/her own, and while they are a part of group, they are not necessarily bound to it. The office was modeled after the Stanford University environment to create a “collaborative office” for professionals in various creative fields. The terms “warehouse” and “aware” were combined to name the office “aWarehouse.”
The office is located in the redevelopment area adjacent to the San Francisco MOMA and Yerba Buena Gardens. Young creative professionals converted the 1,000ÜF factory site over two months. The roughness of the old factory remained with exposed concrete walls and electrical conduits. This group is comprised of creative professionals from a variety of fields, ranging from furniture, graphic, and jewelry designers to computer software programmers, writers, and psychologists. They have tried to maintain a variety in the specialties of the members. aWarehouse provides a new type of office, which goes beyond the limits one faces working at home or renting one’s own office. They can share information and networks, they can get feedback from professionals from different fields, and they can also provide each other with moral support. This stimulating and encouraging work environment provides an excellent setting to enhance the productivity and quality of the creative individual’s work. From a practical standpoint, there are many items that can be shared, such as copy machines, faxes, and scanners. The possibilities of a home+office, located above, are also studied here.
