IBM & ISSC
Cranford, New Jersey ,USA
In the Mobile Working System, the employee is connected to the office by the computer, allowing the employee to work outside of the office. This system has been used predominantly by salesmen. When IBM introduced this system on a trial-basis in 1991, it was welcomed by both employees and customers. IBM currently employs approximately 20,000 mobile workers. This new working style has changed the attitude of the employees. Instead of thinking of work in terms of “time,” they have begun to think of work in terms of “results.”
Integrated Systems Solutions Corporation or ISSC, formerly a division of IBM, became an independent company in 1991 and moved to this New Jersey office. ISSC, a company that specializes in the sales of information systems, adopted the Mobile Working System during this transition.
The building, which was formerly a warehouse for a pharmaceutical company, was transformed into a comfortable office and serves as a base for many mobile workers. All offices are the same. Cubicles for the regular workers are laid out in the large room with a tall ceiling. All partitions are kept low to maintain the view of the overall. There are also meeting rooms of various sizes, a cafeteria, and a mailroom. The mobile workers’ room is in the rear.
There are approximately 1,000 mobile workers at this office. The assignment system called FlexiMove is used to coordinate the workers and cubicles. The mobile worker would register at the computer at the entrance and would be assigned to a specific cubicle. All phone calls would be directed to this desk as well. A cubicle for one out of ten workers is sufficient. The mobile worker usually spends time at the customer’s office and communicates with the office using the laptop, cell phone, pager, and voice mail. This efficient work style was developed so that workers could concentrate on important aspects of their job to enhance customer satisfaction.
