Office of Michael Manwaring
San Anselmo, California, USA
In 1976, Michael Manwaring established his graphic design firm in the heart of San Francisco. During his search for a new office when his lease expired, the contract fell through for two spaces he liked. It was then, that he thought of moving his office to his home in a quiet suburb 40 minutes away from San Francisco. That was 1994. Most of the work at the office of Michael Manwaring was originally in print graphics. Over the years, their work shifted towards environmental graphics and architectural signage, which currently comprise 90% of their overall work. They have completed several large projects for shopping centers and museums.
The office area, which was added to the existing house, is a spacious and comfortable environment finished with warm colors and materials. Five people, including the husband and wife, work here. For Michael, the workday at his home office became more efficient and productive. Before, he would frequently lose his train of thought of an idea he had while driving to work. Now he works on his ideas early in the morning in the kitchen before other employees arrive. Once they arrive, they discuss the new ideas and divide the work to develop details, over coffee in the kitchen. Because it is a house, there are plenty of spaces to go to for a change in scenery to support creative thinking.
The office was hardly affected by the move from a large convenient urban area to the suburbs. Nowadays, since most work is done on the computer, large drawing boards, which require larger spaces, are no longer necessary. Simple meetings or supply orders can be done on the internet. Documents can be easily picked up or sent with delivery services.
In the past, having impressive offices in the heart of a large city was critical to gain the trust of clients. However, as home offices have become more widespread, clients are likely to change their minds.
