TANDEM
San Francisco, California, USA
TANDEM raked in high profits during the 80’s by selling their computers, but later hit the wall with the arrival of the open systems and the micro distribution. It began an active undertaking of the international and the industry standards, and entered the open systems market. After a bold downsizing the business made a comeback now known as the “Tandem Miracle”. The radical change in its business models initiated the reconsideration of the work style, and transformed the office itself. The sales office was reborn as the new business center, adopted the hotelling system where the desks needed registration to be used.
At the TANDEM Business Center, all workers are grouped into sitters and runners. The former are those who have fixed desks, and the latter spend most of the time outside of the office, and only uses the desks after registration. Besides the sitters’ private offices, there are offices for runners, workshop space for group work, and touch down desks for the runners. Every worker is guaranteed a freedom of choosing one’s own work style, on condition that it will be more productive. The information infrastructure is fully equipped, as all the global offices are connected with independent telephone circuit, and can be communicated between extensions. Along with the international video conferencing system, the company is ready to activate any Tandem professional at any time and place.
