CNET Networks
San Francisco, California, USA
CNET and ZDNet, are IT related news sites that are household names even in Japan. They are both part of CNET Networks, based in San Francisco. As a global leader of IT related media, CNET Networks sends out IT related information to a wide range of people from consumers to IT professionals and corporate managers. Their media are not only websites but include Internet radios and magazines. Since its launch in 1992, CNET Networks has acquired related firms and grown to encompass a wider range of services to customers.
These successive acquisitions made the company a hodgepodge of different cultures. At the time of relocation and building of new headquarters, the new office called for an integrated brand that established a new identity as CNET Networks.

A century old warehouse building was stripped down to three floor slabs and columns, and then expanded by adding three more floors of reinforced concrete, as well as enlarging each floor area. Different divisions occupied each of the six floors that were connected physically and visually by a penetrating staircase in the middle of the office. CNET Networks, in bringing together different companies, designated simple and neutral colors of orange, black and gray over white, as the new company colors and used them in most interior finishes and furniture.

The workspace is an open office with desk systems that will not interfere with communication and enable easy relocation. Each floor has two to four ‘Flex Zones,’ that can be customized as meeting room or storage, as needed by the department. This is one example of how the company respects the different cultures and work styles of each company background. Mail rooms, food services and game corners are scattered throughout the office, encouraging workers to actively move around and communicate more. The nature of headquarters draws many workers visiting from other sites. Many small booths, called ‘Hotel Stations’ are provided for confidential phone calls and as quiet rooms.
